About the BRIDGES Lab
The Building Reading Instruction to Drive Growth in Every Student (BRIDGES) Lab at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), led by Dr. Phil Capin, conducts collaborative research to bridge reading science and educational practice through the development and evaluation of literacy interventions. A primary focus of our current research is improving text comprehension for students with, or at risk for, reading difficulties. Much of this recent work examines how comprehension can be supported through genre- and discipline-specific instruction, including approaches that integrate reading and writing.
What inspired you to become a reading researcher?
A boy named Ramon inspired me. Ramon was a fourth grader I tutored while in college who experienced reading challenges. Working with Ramon was the first time I experienced the thrill of teaching. I continue to be inspired by children like Ramon, who, despite their challenges, are eager to learn and can make strong progress when provided with supportive instruction."
