Dr. Phil Capin and the BRIDGES Lab are working in partnership with researchers at Utah State University (Drs. Sandi and Ron Gillam) and the University of Texas at Austin (Drs. Sharon Vaughn and Greg Roberts) on an Institute of Education Sciences (IES)-funded project (2024–2028) to develop and evaluate *STORIES* (*Systematic Teaching of Oral Language and Reading Integrated for Elementary Students with Language and Literacy Difficulties*), a small-group narrative language and reading comprehension intervention for students in grades 2 and 3 with or at risk for language and literacy disabilities. This study examines the intervention’s usability, feasibility, social validity, fidelity, and promise for improving student outcomes. Prior narrative language interventions have been shown to improve narrative language outcomes for this population, and STORIES builds on this evidence by incorporating key elements of successful narrative interventions while shifting the focus from oral language to text comprehension. The intervention also includes additional supports to facilitate transfer to grade-level texts, structured routines for student discussion, themed units to build knowledge, supports for emerging bilingual students, and increased opportunities for writing.
